White delivers on late Winfield call-up

Bloemfontein’s Stuart White only found out he was travelling to Belgium for the second round of the French Formula 4 championship at Spa Francorchamps on Tuesday, but the SA Investchem Formula 1600 championship leader came back home with another race victory in his pocket come Sunday afternoon.

“The Winfield Racing School called us on Tuesday and told us to get to Belgium pronto because I was racing at Spa over the weekend,” Stuart explained. “It was a bit of a challenge, but family and a few friends came to the rescue and the next thing I was on the plane to Europe and we made it to Spa for the weekend. “I really had to thank Winfield for this awesome opportunity and what better way to do that than win and that's exactly what I did in the final on Sunday…

“To win at Spa Francorchamps is a dream come true for any race driver, but it was a tough weekend and as it often happens up there, it rained heavily in practice and in qualifying, so I was pretty chuffed to put it fourth on the grid in spite of the challenging conditions. “Race 1 was so hectic and the racing was wild — I had contact with Collette, de Pau … and de Wilde and I fell back to seventh, so I had to fight back to finish fourth! “Race 2 was much of the same with a lot of action and I brought it home fourth again, which put me fifth on the grid for the final.

“I think the final was probably the race of my life — it was dry at last and I made a great start, passing two guys on the first lap and after two laps behind safety car, I passed Leclerc and then Collet for the lead of the race! “Then I just kept my head down and pushed as hard as I could from there to set the fastest lap on my way to win one of the greatest races I have ever driven!

“I am enjoying a brilliant racing year, winning in the SA Endurance Championship, unbeaten in the Investchem Formula 1600 races I have driven so far this year and now this. “There are several people I have to thank, not least my dad and my family who all support me so brilliantly, but also to Winfield and the FFSA Academy for their faith in me and our friends and family who helped make this incredible weekend happen. “Without all of you, none of this would have been possible — I am truly grateful for the support and really happy to have paid it back with a win!”
