SA’s van der Watt scores in USF2000

Cape Town driver Julian van der Watt enjoyed a fruitful maiden weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway over the weekend as he scored a seventh and an 8th over the two heats of the second round of the USF2000 Powered by Mazda championship at the Brickyard’s Grand Prix circuit. Van der Watt moved up to sixth in the championship race in spite of gambling on keeping a fresh set of tyres for the races to climb through the field from 10th and 14th on the grid.

“What a weekend!” a delighted Julian beamed. “I struggled in qualifying as most teams used an extra set of tyres, which we saved for the race, but I had two great races to come home with a seventh and eighth in two very eventful races — I made up loads of positions in both races and really enjoyed a positive weekend at a truly great racetrack. “That brings us up to sixth in the championship, so let’s keep pushing to the next round.

“Special thanks to my Team Pelfrey and my sponsors Race Driver South Africa, Crossley & Webb, OMP, Arai, MRT, and Cooper Tires.” South African Formula 1600 champion Julian stays in Indianapolis for the third round of the championship on the short kilometre long Lucas Oval adjacent to the Speedway over the 500 weekend of 25 May.
