Dino shines at Vaal kart nationals
Cape Town kart star Dino Stermin went to Vereeniging’s SA National Karting championship with one objective in mind and that was to win the Senior Max class. And in spite of having to deal with three other SA karting champions in the field, the reigning WP Senior Max and 2015 SA junior Max champion delivered on his intentions in fine style.
Stermin enjoyed an almost perfect racing weekend aboard his RKT WOrr Kosmic and in spite of a tough third race, he qualified on pole position before reeling off a couple of fine race wins in the opening heats, only to be thwarted of a whitewash after being bumped off in the final.
“My pole lap was absolutely perfect,” Dino explained. “We were struggling with our new kart so we decided to use the old chassis and it was good all weekend – we had great pace every practice session and I kept it there to put it on pole.
“In the first race I just put my head down and pushed – I managed to break the tow to the second placed kart and I pulled a decent gap to take the win. “I had a great start in the second race and managed to keep the lead the whole race despite having Cameron O’Connor sitting on my rear bumper all the way.
“Race 3 was a tough one though – I was making my way to take the lead, but I was pushed wide and went off the track and ended up stone last. “I thought to myself ‘you can do this – don’t give up’ and I pushed every lap like a qualifying lap – three-tenths faster than the front guys and making overtakes every lap and I managed to make my way up to 5th, which was enough to secure the overall day victory.
“It was a great weekend overall – two wins and a come from behind race to secure the win for the day and go home leading the title chase – I’ll take that, thank you very much!
“I also need to thank my dad, the Roos Kart team, Wesleigh and Hugh Orr for all their efforts – without any of you this would not happen. “Now for Killarney – the next regional on the 8th and the national on 29 April – bring it on – I can’t wait!”
