Pretty Killarney set for Cape kart wars

The threat of imminent spring will greet the Cape’s karters to the sixth round of Western Cape Rotax Max Karting Championship and should the sun shine as the long-term prediction promises on 31 August, it will be a splendid day at Killarney. Not that it will make any difference at all on track, as the various class titles head toward delivering their respective champions.

Nowhere will it be harder fought than in premier the DD2 gearbox class, where slow starter Dino Stermin has taken advantage of championship leader Jason Coetzee’s late season woes to close Coetzee's advantage right down to just 15 points, with Jonathan Thomas and Sebastian Boyd still very much in fighting distance in their close fight for the championship third.  It’s even closer between Roy Gruer and Conor Hughes in DD2 Masters where Marco Viegas, Ernst Viljoen and Andre Steenkamp also lurk with intent.

Just one point splits Charl Visser and Kai van Zijl in Senior Max with Simon Simpson-Heath also in close contention and Storm Lanfear not far behind and looking to repeat his maiden victory last time out. Newly-wed Andrew Thomas and Reece Oellermann are also in with a shout.

Troy Dolinschek leads another tight race in the testosterone-rich under-15 high school Junior Max title chase, where Tate Bishop is keeping him honest, while Kyle Visser and Storm Lanfear also have a point to prove, as do Luca Wehrli, Kyle and Andre Le Riche and the fiery Thaqib Meyer.

In primary school action, Jason Macbeath is on the charge in under-13 Mini Max, where he took all three races last time out to close Ethan Stier’s title advantage down, while Paul Malcolm, Mikhail Fernandez and Valentino Hoffman continue their three way fight for third ahead of karting lass Mischa Williams.

Under-11 Micro Max is another class where the leaders are split by nothing more than a single point, so expect no holds barred as arch rivals Reese Koorzen and Reza Levy take their fight to the next level. Don’t ignore an on form Joshua Smit or the three Ethans — Deacon, Lennon and Stier, or Yusuf Parker among this lot either.

Rayan Karriem has had a strong run in baby Bambino, where the real fight is for second between rookie Jordon Wadeley and Luan Mostert. More impressive karting newcomers, Rhoderick Simpson, Kai van Rensburg and Nikolas Louw are also ready to impress among a rapidly growing grid of racing rookies.

Johan Hamman, Gary Lennon, Michael and Jared Jordan and Sean le Riche will fight it out for Cape Clubmans honours and Joaquin de Oliveira, Lucas Royston, Josh Smit and Jason MacBeath are in the Mini Rok title chase. The Killarney Kart Track is on the infield of the main circuit with good food and refreshments available, informative commentary; a cool atmosphere in the pits and great racing on track.
