White takes SA Formula 1600 title

Saturday proved a dream come true for Stuart White, as the Bloemfontein teenager White cruised to the 2018 Investchem Formula 1600 championship to not only claim the R200K cash prize, but he also picked up the hallowed ticket to represent South Africa and compete in the Road to Indy shootout in Arizona in December. It was in reality just a formality for White to follow title rival Nicholas van Weely home in the first race to clinch it, before he closed off with a bonus point for the fastest lap of the weekend.

"After one of the best days in my life and wrapping up my fourth South African racing championship, I can’t thank my family enough for being there for me from day one and every step of the way,” Stuart admitted. “Without my family and my three biggest supporters by my side, most of all my dad, who has sacrificed so much for me over the years, none of this would have been possible — I'd never have mastered some of the challenges I've had to face along the way.

"I was very cautious on Saturday - I just had to finish, so I decided not to fight Nick Van Weely or Scott Temple and just finished behind them to wrap up the title. "In Race 2 I could not catch an on form Temple - I tried a few passes and was not able to make them stick, but it was still a wonderful day in my racing career and I need to thank Mark Lauth from Fantastic Racing and the whole team that helped make this happen and for a brilliant car all season long.

“But Road to Indy Scholarship Shootout, here I come!” Stuwie grinned. “All that hard work has paid off and now there’s much more to come in preparation for the Shootout in Arizona in the USA — thank you Mr Ian Schofield and Investchem for this wonderful opportunity!” The two-day Road to Indy shootout goes down at the Bondurant Racing School in Phoenix, Arizona in the United States in December, with the winner earning a full US Formula 2000 drive in 2019.
