Delon keeps delivering, Charl struggles

Lee Thompson Racing endured another weekend of contrasts at the fourth round of the Extreme Festival motor races at the East London Grand Prix circuit over the weekend. Young gun Delon Thompson delivered another standout performance as he overcame a few challenges to deliver two more strong points scoring positions in the Engen Polo Cup, but it was a trying weekend for Charl Smalberger in Sasol GTC2.

“We may only have had two cars in East London, but the lads still kept us busy,” team boss Lee Thompson admitted. “Delon continues to impress and delivered a workmanlike performance to bring home another two solid points scoring finishes, but Charl’s cruel luck continues — he had the pace for a podium in both races, but lady luck had different plans for him again this weekend.”

Delon Thompson qualified his MF Autobody LTR Polo ninth for the opening Engen Polo Cup race before moving up to yet another points-paying eighth in the opening race and then to take seventh in race 2 and seventh for the day and fifth among the Junior drivers. “East London was another positive weekend,” Delon reported. “We had great pace throughout the weekend but qualifying never quite went according to plan although I still managed to gain positions in both races to score more good results. “Now I’m looking forward to more good results on my first visit to Port Elizabeth — huge thanks as ever to Lee and MF Autobody!”

It was however a weekend to forget for Charl Smalberger and his Sabertek Golf GTI. “That was a tough one!” Charl admitted. “It started well enough — I was third in Friday practice and I had qualified third, but the car over-boosted and the weekend just turned around when I was sent to the back of the grid. “The first race was pretty good and I fought back up to fifth keeping in mind a good slot for the reverse grid second race. “That worked well and I was dicing for second with Robertson and we were closing on the leader when I had to stop for a huge vibration after one of my tyres delaminated to end a terrible day. “Bring on Port Elizabeth!”
