Indy weekend another first for van der Watt

Its back to Indianapolis for an appointment over the 500 weekend for Cape Town’s US Formula 2000 driver Julian van der Watt as the series heads into its fifth and sixth rounds at the kilometre-long Lucas Oil Raceway adjacent to the Brickyard Friday 25 May. Van der Watt has enjoyed a positive rookie run over the opening four races and he plans to further improve on his fifth in the overall championship race after moving up from 8th over the previous rounds on the Indy Grand Prix Circuit.

“We started on with my first race on a street track in St Pete and moved on to the Indy Grand Prix Circuit and now I’m ready for more new territory at the short Lucas Indy oval,” Julian explained. “I have had a good run so far — I learned so much at St. Pete and kept it out of the wall to score good points and then we had a great weekend on the GP track and this weekend is another new experience with a 75-lap race around a short oval, so the plan is to look, learn and bring it home in one piece.

“It’s my first time racing on an oval, but I have some great people around me in Team Pelfrey and I will be leaning on their experience at this weekend’s Cooper Tires Freedom 75,” the South African Formula 1600 champion concluded.  “I cant wait for this one and I plan to once again do my sponsors, Race Driver South Africa, Crossley & Webb, OMP, Arai, MRT, and Cooper Tires proud.”

The starts with practice and rookie observation for Julian Thursday 24 May before qualifying and the race Friday afternoon (midnight SA time). Log on to usf2000.com to follow the action as it happens.
