A South African performance icon is born

Road To Race is a South African tuning house that sells a range of super-Mustangs and Rangers, which benefit a significant level of re-engineering to deliver an exquisite and unique range of bespoke performance Fords.

Comprising a trio of Rangers and a Mustang, the new Road To Race range is topped by a pair of 500kW supercharged V8s – the RTR Mustang and a RTR Ranger 660 like never before. There is also a 325kW V8 RTR Ranger 415 and a 185kW RTR Ranger 250 powered by a tweaked 3.2-litre Ford turbodiesel. All RTR enhancements include various levels of chassis, suspension, drivetrain and brake enhancements; along with aerodynamic and interior trim upgrades.

Designed, developed and built by Justin Price’s, Port Elizabeth-based Hi-tech Automotive, under the watchful eye of Peter Lindenberg, the RTR Ranger range is covered by an extensive RTR 4-year/120 000km warranty, while the RTR Mustang has a 3 year/60 000km RTR Warranty.

New RTR enhanced cars are sold and maintained by a network of Road to Race dealerships around the country, with several centres already covered, while outlets remain available in other areas.

“Road to Race will soon become synonymous with performance motoring in South Africa.” company CEO Peter Lindenberg explained. “It all starts now through a stunning new range of value for money performance products starting with the RTR Mustang - a brilliant new option that brings value and performance to the market, but the biggest news is the arrival of the unique RTR Ranger range bound to gain traction as the Bakkie of Bakkies in a bakkie mad market.

“We have three RTR Ranger models on offer, from the wild supercharged V8 660, through the normally aspirated V8 415 to the turbodiesel 250.”

The new RTRs in detail

RTR Ranger 660
The most exclusive RTR Ranger is the 660 powered by a 500kW (660 horsepower) supercharged 5-litre Coyote V8 – the same engine as the RTR Mustang coupled to a 6-speed Tremec manual gearbox driving the rear wheels.

Sporting upgraded Fox suspension and brakes, 18" RTR Wheels and performance-rated tyres as well as unique, state of the art body kit and interior upgrades, the RTR Ranger 660 has to be the ultimate in bakkies.

RTR Ranger 660 also benefits a unique and much needed chassis stiffener, an anti-tramp bar and a lowered diff ratio for lightning acceleration, while RTR offers a 20" wheel and tyre option on the 660, as well as a Bespoke RTR Brake upgrade. The 20” wheel upgrade is required when fitting the brake upgrade.

RTR Ranger 660 also gets a colour-matched full body kit including wheelarch flares, a RTR grille and bonnet scoop and a tailgate panel. Add RTR badging and striping, a RTR stainless steel engine badge and chassis plaque; a RTR roll bar, side steps and a rubberized load bay.

The RTR Ranger 660’s cabin gains Alcantara upholstery with RTR branded carpets, seats and a RTR dash plaque.

RTR Ranger 250
Bakkie fans and diesel lovers who may want the aesthetic advantages of those V8s without the engine transplant, also have a most attractive RTR option in the RTR Ranger 250. The turbodiesel RTR benefits a healthy gain in power and performance over a standard Ranger 3.2-litre 5-cylinder Duratorq TDCI, whether that be in automatic or manual, 4x2 or 4x4.

RTR tweaked to produce 185kW (250 horsepower) and 550Nm, the 38kW upgraded turbodiesel Ranger 250 benefits Unichip tuning and a down pipe exhaust and is likely to be the most popular model on the range considering that it comes with the same Perana body and trim kit and other optional upgrades as the RTR Ranger 415.

T-Rex and RSR Rangers
In addition to the three RTR Rangers, Road To Race offers a pair of aggressive, aesthetics-only upgrades in its T-Rex and RSR kits. The Ranger T-Rex body option includes flared wheel arches, a raised bonnet scoop, bulky front bumper and tail gate detail, all designed to stand out, supplied and fitted in the existing bakkie’s body colour along with various wheel and tyre options.

The RSR kit includes flared wheel arches, bonnet and scoop, front bumper and tail gate along with wheel and tyre options in a range that is already available for the Ranger, with other popular bakkie kits set to follow soon.

RTR Mustang
With right hand drive Mustangs now available in South Africa and strong demand for unique and highly personalised versions of the original Pony Car, there are several exotic and quite expensive imported Mustang conversions available in South Africa.

Now Road To Race has engineered a mighty South African-bred Mustang pumping out more than 500kW from its RTR supercharged 5-litre V8 along with a performance exhaust system, modified suspension and upgraded brakes to match its newfound prowess, all wrapped up an aggressive body kit with 20” wheels shod with Pirelli P Zero high performance tyres.

"The RTR is aimed at the Mustang upgrade market", Peter Lindenberg explained. “The RTR Mustang is competitively priced to take on rival upgrades. It costs R665 000 for a RTR upgrade, which means the price of a complete car is R1 539 000, with unrivalled standard componentry. Beat that!

The 500kW (660 horsepower) supercharged 5-litre V8 RTR Mustang upgrade includes a stainless steel high performance cat back quad pipe exhaust system, performance suspension and dampers and up-spec high performance side shafts, while upgraded front and rear disc and front calliper brakes are optional.

The RTR Mustang gets 20" RTR Wheels and Pirelli P Zero Tyres, a RTR body kit comprising bonnet, front fenders, rocker panels, boot spoiler; RTR sill plates, coil covers and RTR branded seats.
