Sunday’s penultimate Rotax Max KZN Regional Karting Championship races delivered some great racing, in spite of several drivers missing the meeting to race at Zwartkops on Saturday in preparation for the national there next weekend. Several drivers however opted to race both meetings as they travelled back to Pietermaritzburg overnight, direct from the Pretoria meeting.

Among them, Rob Whiting pulled his premier class DD2 machine from his travel weary trailer, put it on pole and take three race wins. He was however kept on his toes but the returning Luca Canderle. Behind them, Jonathan Pieterse took three DD2 Masters wins from Alistair Mingay, who crashed in qualifying after also rushing back from Zwartkops, with Ryan Wilde, Dane Temlett and Chris Grobbelaar next up.

Riley Horner was on pole for what proved to be a splendid Senior Max afternoon, before Brent Walden took the opening race win from Horner and Shrien Naidoo. Naidoo beat Horner to second in a wild second and third heats, with Jonathan Pieterse, Daniela Marzoppi and Yifan Li also dicing hard behind.

Shane Foley then came from behind to take the first Max Masters race from Dean Rice, Richard and Bev van Heerde. Foley fought back to steal reverse grid race 2 from pole man Richard van Heerde and Eric Marzoppi, before Bev van Heerde made off to take the final from Foley and Richard van Heerde .

Also fresh from the trek back from Pretoria, Troy Snyman was in dominant form in Junior Max, taking all three wins from Dhivian Naidoo, with Nikheil Kulparsad under pressure from impressive newcomer Corban Spies in fourth.

Travis Mingay was another to return from Zwartkops to take Micro Max pole position before taking the race 1 victory. Uzair Khan then turned the tables to win race 2 before Mingay fought back to take the final and the day, with Kyle Spies, Dylan Watkins and Kiera Naidoo in the mix.

The fast-improving Troy Pieterse took three Bambino race wins from Busani Sithole and Kayden Pistauer. Last but not least, Lisa Mingay beat Stan Whiting to the social 4 stroke win on a tie-break with Eddie Lloyd third. 

Most of KZN’s karters will now trek back to Pretoria for that national double-header on 19 and 20 September.
