Porsche duo dominate SA's oldest race

Bigfoot Express Porsche Carrera Cup teammates, Andrew Culbert and Sun Moodley made short work of South Africa's oldest motor race as Culbert stormed to a 31-second Border 100 victory over Moodley at the East London Grand Prix Circuit on Saturday. Jason Lamb (Spindrift Kawasaki) meanwhile took the 25-lap Border 100 motorcycle race on a day of entertaining vacation racing at the classic beachside racetrack.

The 46-lap Border 100 car endurance race goes back to 1934 and drew a full and varied entry as Culbert and Moodley controlled the race from the front, ahead of Colin Elison and Greg Thornton out of Gauteng in their classic Scuderia Ellisoni Chevron sports car, a similar distance further adrift of Moodley. Durban driver Mo Mia was fourth, two laps further behind in his Porsche with Rajendhren Naidoo another two laps adrift.

The stars of the show were however local lads Quintin Lessing and Darron Gudmanz (Treadz Tyres Mitsubishi Lancer Evo) and PE 3-hour shock winners Phillip Weise and Dean Ball (Solid Pave BMW 328i), who were part of a group of cars that diced all the way home, with the Mitsubishi beating the BMW to the flag by all of 0.7 seconds to steal tin-top glory with Adrian Le Roux and Klippies Krige’s Nissan another tenth of a second adrift.

Umhlanga driver Byron Oliver kept a watching brief, another 7 seconds behind in his Megapile Birkin, while Chris Farley and Dylan Durand closed off the top ten ahead of Fritz Kleynhans' Shelby-Nissan, Nick Dodds and Troy Marais (Lola).

Lamb takes bike 100
Jason Lamb (Spindrift Kawasaki) took the 25-lap Border 100 motorcycle race by half a minute from Gerrie Havenga (Yamaha) and Casey Myburgh. Lamb earlier took the sprint race win by three seconds from Garrit Nel, Chris Webster, Bradley Rehse (Yamaha), Myburgh and Havenga.

Glen Elliot (Suzuki) beat Chad Bilsberry (Waterboy Honda) to the opening Classic Motorcycle race, with  Cameron Sweetman, PE visitor Jan Dorfling (Suzuki), John Quin (Ducati) and Honda duo Kevern Farley and Mattie Wood next up, but the second race proved epic when Elliot  came from behind to pip Bilsberry at the post by just 0.9 seconds. Quin was third from Dorfling, Sweetman and William Kew (Honda).

Collin Ellison took his Chevron to an easy first Open Tops race win over local driver Gary Marais (Harper), Phil Clarke's Birkin and Lotus trio, local lass Cherne Marais, PE driver Alwyn Kretzman and Kean Barnard. Ellison had to work harder for the second race win, by just a second over Byron Oliver (Megapile Birkin) and the Lotus 7s of Cherne Marais, Jared De Kock. Kretzman and Sebastian Schutte.

Hubcap on holiday
Willie Hepburn made the trip from Jozi to take his 1980s modified saloon racing Sabat Opel Rekord V8 to the first Border Modified win over Bevan Schwartz' Corvette with Sun Moodley next up in his Porsche from Jozi visitor Keagan Pottas, Shaun Gradwell and Mo Mia’s Porsche. The second and third Modified races produced similar results, save for Gradwell beating Pottas to fourth each time.

Hepburn also romped to triple Border Historic Saloons race victories in his Rekord, a second clear of local hope Darron Gudmanz’ Ford Capri Perana in race 1 with Danian Staffan (Ford), Mike Forsyth (Cobra) and PE driver Brendan Smith (Chevy Can Am) next up and Alec Gudmanz from Queenstown sixth in his Perana. Willie then cleared off to beat Gudmanz and Forsyth, Chris Blom (Ford Capri) and Jeffreys Bay visitor Ian Thompson's Mercedes in the second and third heats to make it six wins in six races.

The Border 100 weekend closed off the 2018 South African circuit racing season.
